Look closely at the panel arrangement

Balanced panel arrangements give Colonial style doors a clear, orderly appearance. Choose a solid wood design that relates to your home’s windows and trim, then customize it for an exterior entry, an interior room, or screen and storm use.

The number of panels is only part of the design. Their relative heights and widths, the rails between them, and the depth of the profiles all affect how a Colonial door looks. Compare those details with existing doors and nearby woodwork before choosing a pattern.

Raised panels give light and shadow a place in the design, while a simpler profile keeps the surface quieter. For a main entry with a paneled face, explore our solid wood exterior doors. Custom sizing lets the proportions be considered alongside the actual opening.

Coordinate the screen door with the main entry
A Colonial screen door should work with the panel pattern behind it. Compare where its horizontal rails cross the main door and how much of the lower panels remains visible. The layouts in our Traditional Screen & Storm Doors collection offer a useful place to start.

With removable inserts, the same door can serve as a Colonial storm door when screen is exchanged for glass. The wood frame and rail pattern stay in place. Choose screen for ventilation through an open main doorway and glass for added weather protection.

Continue the design from room to room
Our solid wood interior doors let you carry a related panel pattern through the home. In a hallway with several doorways, compare the height of the rails and the panel proportions across different door widths. Consistent details can connect those openings without requiring every door to be the same size.

We use traditional joinery and solid wood, with African Mahogany as standard. Interior doors offer the full selection of 17 woods; exterior and screen and storm products need a species suited to outdoor exposure. Paint can unify the doors and casing, while stain makes the grain part of the design.

Select a Colonial design above to customize online. Doors arrive unfinished with guidance for sealing and finishing. If you are coordinating new work with existing doors, our craftspeople can help you compare the panel layout and dimensions before the design is finalized.
