French doors use a wood frame around one or more glass panels. A single glazed door can connect a kitchen or living area to the porch; a pair can serve a wider opening onto a patio or garden. We make the designs in this collection as single doors or coordinated pairs, so the glass pattern can suit the space you have.

For a pair, consider which door you will open for everyday passage and how much room the swing needs on either side. Nearby furniture, walls, and the outdoor landing all affect that choice. Plan the handles, meeting edges, and frame together as you configure the doors.

Glass divisions that work with the view
Several smaller panes create a pattern across the opening, while fewer, larger panes leave more of the view uninterrupted. Compare the divisions with nearby windows and with what you see beyond the door. In a pair, the center framing becomes part of that arrangement too.

True divided lites use separate panes within wood divisions. Some narrow layouts may call for simulated divided lites, with bars applied over a larger pane. Exterior designs use insulated tempered glass, with Low-E and decorative choices available by design. Clear glass preserves the view, while textured or privacy glass can reduce how directly people outside see into the room.

Wood French doors built for outdoor entries
Our French exterior doors are made from solid, kiln-dried hardwood with traditional joinery. Standard thickness is 1¾ inches, with thicknesses available up to 2¼ inches. Pre-hung units include matching wood jambs, ball-bearing hinges, weather sealing, and an adjustable mahogany threshold. Slabs are also available for suitable existing frames.

The wood surrounding the glass contributes to the view from both indoors and out. African Mahogany comes standard, with grain you can highlight under stain. We can help you assess other species for the door’s exposure. Your doors arrive unfinished, ready for an exterior-grade finish and full sealing before installation.
