A Dutch door has upper and lower sections that open independently. You can leave the bottom closed while opening the top, or connect the two with a Dutch door bolt to use them as a full-height door. That flexibility can be useful at a kitchen entry, mudroom, or front porch where you want an open connection outside without opening the whole doorway.

Consider the dividing rail’s height alongside nearby counters and windows. An optional shelf adds a ledge at the split; its projection should be planned with the swing and any screen door in front. We can help you work through those details for the design you choose.

Glass and weather sealing for an exterior Dutch door
Glass in the upper section brings daylight into the room even when both halves are closed. A broad pane gives a more open view, while divided lites add a pattern that can relate to nearby windows. Clear insulated tempered glass is standard in glazed exterior designs, with Low-E and decorative options available by design.

The horizontal joint needs its own weather seal in addition to the seals around the frame. Our exterior Dutch doors use a dedicated sealing system at the meeting rail. Pre-hung units include matching solid wood jambs, ball-bearing hinges, weatherstripping, and an adjustable mahogany threshold.

Double Dutch exterior doors for wider openings
A double Dutch door combines two divided doors in one paired entrance. Our split astragal, the strip covering the joint between the pair, allows both upper sections to open while the lower sections remain shut. Mortise flush bolts are part of the exterior pair’s hardware arrangement.

Plan which side you will use for everyday passage and how you want the upper sections to operate. The dividing rails and glass layouts can be coordinated across the pair. Customize a solid wood Dutch door for your home
We use kiln-dried solid hardwood and traditional joinery, with a standard exterior thickness of 1¾ inches and thicknesses available up to 2¼ inches. African Mahogany comes standard, with a natural grain that can be highlighted under stain. Our team can help you evaluate other species for your entry’s weather exposure and finish.
