Give the bracket room to show its shape

A bracket brings detail into a corner. Its height determines how far it extends down the post or frame; its projection determines how far it reaches across the opening. Consider both measurements against the surfaces around it.

A compact pattern can finish a narrow opening, while a larger porch bay may give a more expressive design room to be seen. Look at the open areas within the bracket as well as its outer edge. Those spaces help define the pattern when you see it against the siding or the sky.

Choose a design that fits the space
Each Victorian bracket and corbel is made to the dimensions listed for that design. When replacing a missing piece, compare the available patterns and sizes with any surviving bracket and the surrounding woodwork.

On a compatible screen and storm door, brackets add decorative detail within the corners of the frame. Check the bracket’s listed dimensions against the rails and the screen or glass area. Our craftspeople can help you assess which available design will fit your door.

Relate the ornament across the porch
Flat-sawn balusters bring a repeated pattern to the railing, while decorative spandrels extend detail between posts above. A curve from either can guide the bracket choice. You can also keep the bracket simpler where the surrounding woodwork is already elaborate.

If you are adding Victorian porch enclosure panels, plan their position alongside any existing brackets. The panels form the fixed screen and glass sections of the enclosure, so both the panel dimensions and the corner details need room within the porch opening.

Choose the wood with the finish in mind
The finish affects how a bracket reads against its background. Paint can connect it to the posts or make its outline stand out. If you prefer stain beside an African Mahogany door, our team can help you consider coordinating wood options suited to the bracket’s exposure.

Browse the patterns above and check the dimensions for each design. Share the location and space available if you would like help choosing. Our solid wood millwork collection includes the other details you may want to coordinate.
