Decorative Spandrel

A decorative spandrel draws the eye across an opening. On a porch, its repeating detail can connect one post to the next beneath the roof. Indoors, it can define the transition between two spaces without filling the doorway.

Consider the height of the design as well as its length. A taller pattern extends farther down into the opening; a shorter one leaves more of the view beneath it. Look from inside the porch as well as from outside to judge how much of that space you want the spandrel to occupy.

Plan the pattern across each bay
Our decorative spandrels are sold in custom lengths. Measure each opening individually, even where the porch bays appear equal. Check the height of your chosen design against the space available and note where the ends will meet the posts.

Coordinate the upper and lower details
Victorian brackets and corbels can frame the corners beneath a spandrel. Leave enough room for both designs to read clearly, especially where a large bracket projects into the same space. The railing below may repeat a curve or use a simpler pattern.

Select wood for the setting
Choose the finish in relation to the surfaces beside and behind the spandrel. Paint can continue the porch trim color; stain brings the grain into view.
