Old-fashioned wood screen doors made for your home
Familiar panel layouts and simple wood detailing make a traditional screen door easy to coordinate with your entry. We build each door from solid wood to your measurements, with screen and glass options for fresh air in warm weather and protection when the seasons change.
The appeal of a traditional wood screen door often comes down to proportion. An open upper section can keep the glass in your entry door visible, while a lower panel or cross rail can echo the lines of the door behind it. These familiar arrangements work well with the paneled doors and straightforward trim found on many Colonial, farmhouse, and cottage homes.
As you compare designs, look at the height of the horizontal rails and the size of the lower panels. A layout that relates to your main door helps the two work together when both are closed. If you prefer more decorative curves or cutouts, our Victorian screen and storm doors offer another direction.
Change the insert as the weather changes
Your traditional screen door can also serve as a storm door. Choose both removable screen and glass inserts if you want ventilation in warm weather and an extra layer of weather protection when needed. The wood door stays in place when you change the insert.
Fiberglass mesh and clear tempered glass are standard options. Other screen choices include high-visibility, No-See-Um, pet-resistant, aluminum, and copper bronze. Low-E storm glass is also available. Selected designs can be built with fixed screen or fixed glass if you don’t need to change between them.
Solid wood sized to your opening
We use kiln-dried solid wood and mortise-and-tenon joinery, with standard thicknesses from 1⅛ to 1¾ inches. Each door is made to your specifications, including nonstandard dimensions for an existing frame. For a paired entry, explore our double screen and storm doors.
Start with our standard African Mahogany for a traditional solid wood door with natural beauty and durability. If you have another species in mind, we can help you weigh that choice against the door’s exposure and your planned finish. Your door arrives unfinished, with guidance for sealing and painting or staining all surfaces before installation.
Configure your traditional screen and storm door
Choose a design above to customize its size, wood, and inserts online. A slab can be fitted to a suitable existing frame, while pre-hung options include mounting on new brick molding in front of an entry door or in a full jamb for a porch opening.
If you’re unsure how a rail layout or installation option will work with your entry, our craftspeople can help you work through the details.
