Choose a panel pattern for the opening

Crossbuck details, simple panels, and Dutch openings offer different starting points for a farmhouse door. Choose the pattern and operation that suit your kitchen, mudroom, or main entrance, with solid wood construction and dimensions made for the opening.

Vertical lines draw the eye along the height of a door, while a crossbuck adds an X-shaped detail. A simpler lower panel can leave the emphasis on glass above. Compare those arrangements with nearby cabinetry, porch rails, and trim to decide how much pattern the opening needs.

Our range includes crossbuck designs in both Dutch doors and screen and storm doors. On an open crossbuck screen door, the X-shaped wood detail leaves space around it for screen or glass. That gives the lower section a more open appearance than a solid panel.

A Dutch opening for everyday use
Our Dutch exterior doors let you open the top independently or fasten both halves together to use the full doorway. At a kitchen or mudroom entry, the upper opening can bring in air while the bottom stays closed. Glass in the upper section also admits daylight when the door is shut.

Consider the split height beside counters or nearby windows, and plan room for the upper half to swing. An optional shelf adds a ledge at the meeting rail; its projection needs to work with the opening and any screen door in front.

Dutch interior doors bring divided operation to a doorway between rooms. Compare the split height with the exterior door if both are visible from the same kitchen or hall, while choosing the construction intended for each location.

Farmhouse screen and storm doors
A companion screen door allows ventilation through an open main entry. The layouts in our Traditional Screen & Storm Doors collection include simple divisions and crossbuck designs. Look at where their rails cross the main door, especially if it has a Dutch split or upper glass.

Removable inserts let the same wood frame serve as a farmhouse storm door when you exchange screen for glass. The wood pattern remains in place through the seasonal change.

Customize the wood and dimensions
African Mahogany is our standard solid wood. Stain reveals its grain; paint can bring the door into the color scheme of the porch or kitchen. Select any alternative species for the intended use and outdoor exposure where applicable.

Choose a design above to customize online, with our craftspeople available to help with dimensions or the Dutch and screen door combination. Doors arrive unfinished with guidance for sealing and finishing before installation.
