Start with the glass and panel layout of your main door. If it has a group of smaller windows near the top, consider where the screen door’s horizontal rails will fall in relation to that glass and the panels below. A compatible layout lets you see the main door’s design through the screen.
The surrounding trim matters too. Compare the width of the door’s wood frame and the shape of its openings with the casing and porch details. Straight lines and simple geometry can carry those details into the screen door without needing an exact copy of the entry door.
Craftsman storm doors with removable screen and glass
A removable insert gives you a screen door and storm door in the same solid wood frame. Use screen when you want air to circulate through the entry, then exchange it for tempered glass when the weather calls for more protection. The rail layout and wood detailing stay the same.
Fiberglass is the standard screen, with options including high-visibility, No-See-Um, pet-resistant, aluminum, and copper bronze. Clear tempered and Low-E storm glass are available, along with selected decorative glass choices. White or bronze insert frames let you coordinate that small detail with the finish of the door.
Wood and construction for everyday use
We build our Craftsman screen and storm doors from kiln-dried solid wood with mortise-and-tenon joinery. This joins the horizontal rails to the vertical sides of the door to form its frame. Standard thicknesses range from 1⅛ to 1¾ inches, and each door is made to your specified dimensions.
A stained finish brings the wood grain into the Craftsman design, while paint can tie the door to surrounding trim. We offer African Mahogany as standard, with other wood choices depending on the entry’s exposure. Your door arrives unfinished so you can choose the look that works with your home. We provide guidance for sealing all surfaces before installation.
