One doorway with two opening sections
A Dutch door is divided horizontally into independently hinged upper and lower sections. Open the top to speak to someone on the other side, or connect the sections with a Dutch door bolt to use them together as a full-height door.
The position of the dividing rail changes both the appearance and how you use the opening. Consider its height alongside a nearby counter or window. If you choose an optional shelf at the split, allow room for its projection when the door swings.
Choose an interior or exterior Dutch door
Dutch exterior doors bring that flexibility to a front porch, kitchen entrance, or mudroom. Weather sealing at the horizontal joint works with the seals around the frame. Glazed exterior designs use insulated tempered glass, so the upper section can admit daylight while it is closed.
Dutch interior doors connect rooms while letting you keep the lower part of the doorway closed. You can see and speak through the open top without opening the entire door. Double Dutch doors for a wider opening
A double Dutch door is a pair of doors, each with its own upper and lower sections. Both tops can open while the bottoms remain closed. It is a different arrangement from a conventional pair with two full-height leaves.
