A gentle arch and a full round top give an entrance different proportions. The height at the center, the point where the curve begins, and the width below it all affect the door’s outline. On an existing home, those details help the new door relate to the surrounding masonry, casing, and windows.

Balance wood and glass within the curve
A paneled round top exterior door gives the grain and raised profiles room to stand out. Glass can bring daylight into the hall and carry the curve into the upper part of the design. Consider how much of the entry you want visible from outside, particularly if the door opens straight into a living room.

Glazed exterior designs use insulated tempered glass, with Low-E and decorative choices available by design. For a wider entrance, paired arched doors let the curve extend across both leaves. Sidelights or a transom can also be planned as part of an entrance unit, with the door and surrounding components considered together.

Solid wood construction for an exterior entry
We build with kiln-dried solid hardwood and traditional joinery. Standard exterior thickness is 1¾ inches, with thicknesses available up to 2¼ inches. African Mahogany is our standard wood, offering natural beauty and durability for the shaped frame and panels. We can help assess other wood choices for your entry’s exposure and planned finish.

Choose a slab for a suitable existing frame or a pre-hung door with a matching shaped jamb. Exterior pre-hung units include ball-bearing hinges, weatherstripping, and an adjustable mahogany threshold. Doors arrive unfinished, with guidance for sealing and painting or staining all surfaces before installation.

Plan the profile before the door is built
Width and overall height alone may not describe an arched opening fully. Measurements or a template establish the curve; the information needed also depends on whether you are keeping the frame or replacing it. Our craftspeople can help you determine which details to provide.
